The AI Trap in Mindset!

Artificial Intelligence at Summit

At Summit Trails Online High School, we believe Artificial Intelligence (AI) can support student learning when used responsibly, ethically, and with clear guidance. AI has the potential to help students plan, refine, and explore ideas in creative ways, while still ensuring they build strong core skills and think critically about their work.
To make this possible, RVS has created student guidelines that outline how AI can be used at different levels of engagement:
-
No GenAI – students complete work without AI to demonstrate their own knowledge and skills.
-
GenAI Planning – AI can be used for brainstorming, outlining, or research, while students show how they refined ideas independently.
-
GenAI Collaboration – AI may assist with drafting, feedback, or refinement, but students must review and adjust all AI-generated content.
-
Full GenAI – students may direct AI extensively to complete tasks, with an emphasis on critical thinking.
-
GenAI Exploration – students and teachers may work together to explore innovative ways AI can solve problems or create new approaches.
Our teachers will use these levels in class to set expectations, guide student use, and ensure that privacy, safety, and ethical practices are always maintained. By modelling responsible use of AI, we help students prepare for a future where AI will play an important role in education, work, and everyday life.
If a student uses AI in a way that does not support their own learning—for example, submitting AI-generated work without meaningful input or reflection—the teacher will connect with the student for a conversation about appropriate use. Our goal is always to guide students toward responsible learning practices. However, if misuse continues after multiple discussions, it will be treated as a matter of academic dishonesty, in line with school expectations.
