Applying for Valedictorian is special honour. The fact you are able to apply means you have accomplished some great things during your time at high school. Whatever the outcome of the application, be proud of your accomplishments, we are proud of you.

How a Valedictorian is chosen

The student's Semester 1 and Mid-Term mark will be used for calculation. The student must be full-time.  No part-time students will be accepted. Students who are taking at least 5 courses with a minimum of 3 cores is required for the year.

Additional academic criteria: no mark lower than 75% in the Grade 12 year. Returning grade 12 students are eligible. Courses must be of a 30 level or Option Course.  If the student is taking a 20 level course and is achieving below a 75% they will not be considered.

Character Traits

  • Candidates should possess and demonstrate a consistent positive attitude.
  • Seen as an exemplary role model & contributing peer in their class
    • involvement in classes, work ethic, attendance, social interactions (in the online world this is more difficult. Therefore teachers will also have a hand in voting for what they have witnessed in the classes the applicant has taken)
  • Extra-curricular or community involvement or possible lived experience whereby they are overcoming

Application Interest

Considerations to highlight:

  • The digital application will be released to eligible students by April 14 and must be submitted to Mr. Smith (by clicking submit) by April 29. No late applications will be accepted.
  • A selection committee will review and score the packages to determine the candidates.
    •  If there are close winners for the honour, teachers will vote for the winner among the students who applied.
  • Further interviews will be conducted with students who have similar mark averages.
  • If a student does not qualify due to mark concerns, the committee will review this. As a Valedictorian represents Summit Trials, the highest average is not the sole valedictorian; the individual must also possess the above qualities.
